It’s not difficult to clean and wash Dyson vacuums brush bar. Do note, however, that the manufacturer does not recommend putting this part in your dishwasher under any circumstances. It is not designed to be washed in hot water and a dishwasher may destroy it.
Instead, follow the guide below, and you’ll soon have a clean and functional part once more.
Step 1: Remove The Brush bars upright
Before doing anything else, make sure your vacuum is disconnected from the power and cannot be switched on. This is a safety measure. If it’s a battery-powered model and you can disconnect the battery, do so.
Next, turn your vacuum over and inspect the brush bar. In many models, the bar slides out of the side of the vacuum.
You may need to use a coin to turn the end cap into the unlocked position. You should then be able to slide the brush bar out, and remove the end cap (which should not be washed).

Step 2: Clean The Brush And Housing
Next, use a rag to wipe down the brush’s housing and remove any dust or debris from that area. You can dampen the rag, but do not make the housing too wet, as it is not designed to handle water.
When you’ve finished with the housing, move on to the brush. You want to remove all the hairs and fibers that have gotten tangled around the brush. You can use your fingers, tweezers, or any other tool to do this.
Make sure you get rid of all the fibers, especially long ones that have tangled around the brush. You can cut any stubborn ones, but be careful not to cut the brush’s bristles.
Step 3: Wash The Brush
It is safe to wash the brush under cold water, and this can help to remove any remaining dirt that you aren’t able to get rid of.
Make sure you remove the end cap before you put the brush under the tap, as this part is not intended to be washed.
Run the cold tap, put your brush under the flow, and gently rub the bristles to remove dirt and dust that is clogging them up. You can use a soft toothbrush to rub around the bristles too if this helps to free the dirt.
Do not use hot water or soap on your Dyson brush, as it is not designed to be cleaned this way, and they may damage it.
Step 4: Dry The Brush
To dry the brush, simply stand it on end and leave it somewhere reasonably warm (but not hot). The water will drip out of the bristles and evaporate, and the brush should soon dry.
Make sure it is completely dry before you reinstall it and use the front vacuum attachment, or water may get into the machine and destroy it.
When you think the brush is dry, pick it up and double-check by running your fingers or a piece of tissue along the base of the bristles.
If it’s still damp, wait longer for it to dry. In general, you should wait about 24 hours for it to dry.
Don’t use a hairdryer, a dryer, or any other kind of tool to speed up the drying of your brush, and don’t place it on a radiator.
Being exposed to heat could damage and warp the bristles. It’s recommended that you allow the brush to completely air dry.
Step 5: Put The Brush Back
When the brush is dry, fit the end cap back onto it and return it to the housing. Screw the end cap into place using a coin, and your vacuum should now be ready to use again.

Problems You Can Face If you Don’t Clean the Dyson Brush
To avoid potential issues, it’s important to regularly clean the brush.
Neglecting this task could result in:
- a clogged vacuum cleaner with reduced suction power,
- a non-spinning Dyson roller that can’t pick up dirt,
- a broken motorized brush, or
- a faster-draining battery.
This doesn’t only cause problems with the vacuum itself but may also have a negative impact on the Dyson vacuum battery life.
