How Do I Fix My Onn TV From Flickering?

If your ONN TV screen flickers, it could be due to many different reasons and troubleshooting each one of them can help fix the problem.

Clear Cache On Your ONN Roku TV

Clear Cache On Your ONN Roku TV

Clearing cache on your TV does not only help with the flickering screen but also fix other TV problems like black screen, slow or laggy response.

You can even clear the cache on your ONN TV even if the screen doesn’t turn on.

Here are the steps to clear the cache on your ONN Roku TV:

  • Press Home button 5 times on your remote.
  • Then, press up arrow key 1 time.
  • Press rewind 2 times followed by pressing fast forward button 2 times.

Note: You always have to press the Home, Up arrow, rewind and fast forward buttons in the same order as provided in the above steps.

Once you complete the steps, Roku will start to clear the cache which will take a few seconds. Your ONN TV will not respond during this process.

Your TV will turn on once the process is complete and start working normally again.

Disable Roku TV Bandwidth Saver

The Roku TV screen may flicker if the inactivity timeout feature is enabled for a few hours. You can resolve this issue by turning off the Bandwidth Saver feature and going to Settings > Network > Bandwidth saver > Turn It Off.

Alternatively, you can turn off the Auto Power Savings by accessing Settings > System > Power > Auto Power Savings and turning it off.

Soft Reset The ONN Roku TV

soft reset your ONN roku tv

Power cycling your TV can be the simplest and most effective way to fix your ONN TV. By resetting your TV, you can solve any issues with temporary memory and reset the main board without losing your personal settings.

The best part is that it’s a quick and painless process that won’t erase any of your saved settings.

To soft reset your ONN Roku TV:

  • Make sure your TV is switched off and unplugged.
  • Hold down the physical power button on the TV for at least 15 seconds.
  • Now, it’s time to drain out any residual power from the TV’s capacitors, which can hold a charge for several minutes. So, wait for 2- 3 minutes and let the residual power drain completely.
  • Plug your TV back in and try switching it on. You will see a flashing red light which means your reset is successful.

Don’t underestimate the power of a simple soft reset. It may seem basic, but it can solve the majority of issues you encounter.

Update Your Picture Settings

ONN Roku TVs offer the convenience of adjusting backlight brightness and other picture settings to address any flickering issues.

While watching a program, simply press the * key on your Roku remote.

Navigate to Picture Settings and try adjusting the Brightness level. Lowering the brightness level often helps resolve screen flashing on and off.

It’s possible that the flickering may be caused by the Picture Mode, so try selecting a mode other than Low Power.

You can also manually fine-tune the Dynamic Contrast and backlight settings.

Check For Loose Connections And Remove Faulty HDMI Cables

Remove Faulty HDMI Cables

Most of the times, a poorly seated cable causes signal noise, resulting in flickering and horizontal lines on ONN TVs.

This issue can arise from three possible causes:

  • Faulty HDMI cable: A break in the cable can lead to these problems.
  • Damaged HDMI port: Broken pins in the port can cause similar issues.
  • Poor HDMI connection: If the cable and connector don’t make full contact, it can result in the same symptoms.

To check your HDMI and other cables, follow these steps:

  • Switch off your TV.
  • Disconnect any HDMI or other physical cables from the back of your TV.
  • If available, use compressed air to clean the contacts on both the cable and the connector on the TV. If you don’t have compressed air, gently blow on them.
  • Firmly reinsert the cables into their respective TV slots.
  • Switch your ONN TV back on.

By following these simple steps, you can ensure optimal performance and connection reliability for your TV setup.

However, if this couldn’t fix the problem, you should try using a different HDMI input.

Most TVs typically have either 3 or 4 HDMI ports. If you’re facing any issues with a specific port, trying one that is located on different pat can be a good option. This port should have a separate connection to the TV’s main board, which may help resolve the problem.

To connect your HDMI cable, follow these steps:

  • Plug the HDMI cable into the new port and take note of the number associated with it.
  • Using your TV remote, press the Home button and select the new input tile on your home screen. Alternatively, you can use the Input or Menu button on your TV itself.
  • This will switch your TV to the chosen HDMI input.

For troubleshooting purposes, you can also try disconnecting all external devices, including those connected by Bluetooth and any coaxial or signal cables. By doing so, the TV will have only a power cable connected to it.

Now, if you turn on the TV you will see a black screen as it will not be receiving any picture, making it hard to find out the screen flicker.

Try accessing the on-screen menu to check if the flickering persists. If it does, this indicates that your external connections are intact and the problem lies within the TV’s hardware.

If the flickering has stopped, proceed to re-plug your HDMI and other cables individually. By doing this, you can identify any damaged cables that may need to be replaced.

Update ONN Roku TV Firmware

To ensure optimal performance, it is crucial to keep your electronic devices, especially smart TVs, up to date with the latest firmware.

To update your ONN Roku TV software, simply follow these steps:

  • Press the Home button on your remote.
  • Navigate to Settings.
  • Use the Right Arrow to select System.
  • Choose System Update.
  • Select Check Now to initiate the update process.

Reset Your ONN TV

Resetting your TV back to its factory settings is considered a more extreme measure as it erases personalized features, downloaded apps, and connected devices. However, it can be worth a try if other methods haven’t resolved the issue.

But before you do a factory reset, it’s better to reset your picture settings first.

Here’s the steps to reset the picture settings on your ONN Roku TV:

  • Press the Home button on your remote.
  • Navigate to System, then select Advanced System Settings.
  • Choose Factory Reset.
  • Select Reset TV audio/picture settings.
  • Press the Play/Pause button three times and your picture settings will reset.

If you’re facing issues with both sound and picture settings, performing a full factory reset might be necessary.

Please note that a factory reset will restore your TV to its original settings, so make sure to back up any important personalization or data beforehand.

To perform a factory reset on your ONN TV, follow these steps:

  • Navigate to the menu on your TV.
  • Select Settings.
  • Choose System.
  • Click on Advanced System Settings.
  • Look for the option labeled Factory Reset.
  • Select Factory Reset Everything.
  • Enter the code shown and click OK to start the reset.

By following these instructions, you’ll be able to easily perform a factory reset on your TV. Resetting your TV can help resolve various issues and ensure optimal performance.

Remove And Clean The T-Con Cables

The Timing Control (T-Con) board is like the maestro of your TV, conducting each pixel row of your screen with perfect precision. It uses its internal clocks to keep everything in sync, giving you a flawless picture.

The Main Board is like the translator, converting your inputs into the magical signals that the T-Con board understands. It’s where you plug in your HDMI and other connectors, making sure your viewing experience is top-notch.

The Power Board is the power wizard of your TV. It converts the home electricity supply into a voltage and current that your TV can use.

These incredible boards work together to power up your TV and bring you endless entertainment!

TV backlights need a high voltage, so your TV has a little voltage inverter board to handle the task. It’s usually placed as a separate board or at one edge of the screen. But, sometimes it is placed with the Power Board or Main Board, depending on the TV model.

These hidden little boards under the back panel can cause some flickering mischief in your LCD/OLED TV.

Sometimes, cable connectors can become loose or accumulate grime and dust, preventing a clean connection. In other cases, components on the circuit boards might fail, resulting in insufficient power for the backlight or an inconsistent picture signal.

If you’re feeling unsure about tackling this yourself, it might be time to call in the experts. Trust me, it’s better to be safe than sorry!

Here’s a full video that shows how you can do it yourself.

Check For Backlight Problems

If your ONN TV is flickering in a single spot, it indicates a backlight problem.

Most ONN TVs usew backlight voltage inverter on the Power Board to power the backlight. You can use a multimeter to confirm if it’s powering your backlight.

However, based on my experience, voltage inverter issues usually result in a completely darkened screen, not partially dark screen.

So, Instead of spending too much time on the voltage inverter, let’s turn our attention to the backlight itself.

Modern ONN TVs have fancy backlights that come in LED strips. While the older ones used to cover the entire frame, modern tvs use a 16″ LED strip connected in series for each row.

These soldered connectors are notorious for being weak, but hey, you can easily fix them yourself if you’re up for some soldering action!

But wait, there’s more! These LED backlights can also fail due to too much power running through them causing thermal degradation of the LEDs that can lead to burnout.

Replacing failed LEDs can be a challenge, since they’re located in the most hard-to-reach spot of your TV.

If you’re not up for a repair adventure, now’s the perfect time to call in the pros. This job involves removing the back panel, disconnecting all the circuit boards and connectors, dealing with another layer of screws for the front panel, and only then can you finally access the LCD panel and the elusive backlights.

Oh, and don’t forget your trusty multimeter which will help you test and find out where the problem is!

Here’s a quick fix for your failed backlight:

  • Unplug your TV and wait for around 30 minutes so that the large capacitors in the power board of the backlight lose the hold charge.
  • Now flip the TV face down on a nice, scratch-free table.
  • Now, grab your screwdriver and start unscrewing those backpanel screws. Your TV should split into two pieces: front and back.
  • You will now see the the T-Con panel, the power board, and the main board. Disconnect all the wires or ribbons that are placed near the TV edge.
  • Time to unveil the bezel. Remove the bezel-holding screws around the edges.
  • With utmost care, remove the bezel, panel, and unlock the TV backlight.
  • Pull out your voltmeter or grab a TV backlight tester. Let’s get technical and check if they are working and the ones that are not!

Another potential cause of flickering could be the TV settings. If you’re using a picture setting that is too high for your TV, such as 4K or HDR, then this can cause flickering.

To fix this, try reducing the picture settings and/or changing the refresh rate to see if this helps reduce any flickering.

If you Tv screen is still flickering there might be an issue with your Roku TV itself. If all else fails, try unplugging the device and plugging it back in again to see if this helps.
