ONN TV Red Light Blinking? What It Means & How To Fix It!

ONN smart TV users may find themselves facing an annoying red blinking light, even when their TV seems to be working fine. The red light is an indicator of a deeper issue that should be addressed – and often can be easily fix.

If your ONN Roku TV is blinking red it means that your device is not getting enough power. During normal operation, this light is typically off or white. It may also flash when you press buttons on your remote control. This helps you know that your commands are being registered.

In this article we’ll explore the possible problems causing the red light to blink on an ONN TV, and a wide range of potential solutions.

Why Is My ONN TV Red Light Blinking?

There are several reasons the red light on your ONN Roku TV may be blinking – all of them serious, but most of them fixable. They are:

  • Insufficient power source / problem with the TV’s power supply.
  • Problematic power equipment.
  • Internal power supply board or circuitry issue.
  • Outdated software.
  • Internet connectivity issues.

You don’t necessarily need to diagnose the problem before trying to solve it.

Most of the solutions in this article are quick and can be done at home and can help you identify the problem via process of elimination, and fix it while you’re at it!

Now that we’ve established might be causing the ceaseless blinking of the red light on your ONN TV, here are a range of options to help you stop it.

1. Run A Firmware Update

Run A Firmware Update

It’s possible the red light is blinking on your ONN Roku TV because the system needs to be updated. To manually check for a software update:

  • Press the Home button.
  • Go to Settings > System > System Update > Check now.
  • If there’s no available update, move on to another solution in this process. If there is an update available, select the option to download and install it, and follow any additional steps if prompted.

On a related note: the red light blinking on the TV could also indicate that an update is already in process, even without you prompting it, since the red light can also indicate standby mode.

If that’s the case, give it a few minutes to see if it completes updating and the blinking just stops on its own.

2. Power Cycle Your ONN TV

remove and replug your TV

The red light blinking on an ONN TV could indicate a power issue. This manual way of refreshing the TV can drain all electrical power from the device and allow it to start fresh, clearing out any issues with the device’s non-permanent memory without erasing any of your settings.

To power cycle your ONN Roku TV:

  • Turn the TV all the way off and unplug the power.
  • Press and hold the physical TV’s power button (usually on the back on side) and keep holding it for at least 15 seconds.
  • Wait at least a full 30 minutes with the TV off and unplugged. This will let all residual power drain from the device.
  • Plug the TV in and switch it on to see if all has returned to normal.

This is considered a “soft reset” and while simple, it’s incredibly effective.

3. Do A Hard Reset

Do A Hard Reset

If the soft reset / power cycle process didn’t stop the red light from blinking, you might consider doing a hard rest on your ONN TV.

Most of the TV’s have a tiny pinhole labeled “reset,” often located near the USB ports. Sticking a pen or paper clip in the hole to press the button will do a hard reset on the TV.

But, this could erase all your data and setting from the television, so only try this if you’ve exhausted other options first.

4. Check For Faulty or Damaged Power Cables

Check For Faulty or Damaged Power Cables

Fixing the blinking red light could be as easy as checking and replacing the power cables so that the power supply is returned to maximum efficiency.

Make sure the cords are of good quality and not too long, since longer cords can cause voltage drops.

Check the cable for any signs of damage, fraying, or loose connection – the power cable should be plugged into both the TV and the wall firmly.

5. Use A Different Power Outlet

It’s possible that the power outlet itself is damaged, rather than the power cord or the TV.

If you suspect this is the case, try unplugging the TV from the current outlet and plug it into a different one.

If the TV works and the red light stops blinking, it’s time to call a professional electrician to inspect the original outlet, which may need to be repaired or replaced.

6. Clean The TV’s Power Port

Dust or residue in the ONN TV’s power port could be interfering with the flow of power enough to cause the red light to blink with its warning message.

Turn off the TV, unplug the power cord from the TV, and use a small dry cloth to sweep out the port. Then, try plugging it back in and turning it on to see if the issue has been resolved.

7. Restart The Wi-Fi Router

Restart The Wi-Fi Router

If none of the above worked, it’s possible the red light is blinking due to an internet connectivity problem rather than a power issue.

If your ONN TV is connected to a Wi-Fi network, try restarting the Wi-Fi router by doing the following:

  • Turn off the TV and unplug it from its power source.
  • Turn off the Wi-Fi router (find its power button) and unplug it from its power source too.
  • Wait a full 60 seconds then plug it back in.
  • Let the router fully reboot and connect to the internet, then turn on the TV.

Hopefully, the red light will no longer be blinking.

8. Manually Re-connect To The Wi-Fi Network

If restarting just the router didn’t work, you should try manually reconnecting the ONN TV to the Wi-Fi network. To do this:

  • Turn off and unplug both the TV and the router. Leave both off for at least two minutes.
  • Plug both back in and wait for the router to reboot and connect to the internet.
  • Turn on the TV, go to Network Settings, and reconnect to the Wi-Fi network.

9. Disconnect External Devices From The TV

Try disconnecting any external devices from the TV as they may be affecting the power supply and causing the red light to blink in caution.

This can include Bluetooth transmitters, wireless speakers, and video game systems.

If you’ve done this, restarted the ONN TV, and still have the issue, carry on with the next strategies.

10. Perform A Factory Reset On Your ONN Television

Perform A Factory Reset On Your ONN Television

If you’re still battling the blinking red light, it may be a deeper software issue that requires a factory reset. Only do this if you’ve exhausted other the other options, since it will erase all your data.

Here’s how to perform the factory reset on an ONN TV:

  • Go to Settings > Advanced Settings.
  • Scroll to the bottom and select Reset Everything.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to perform the reset.
  • Allow the television to restart.

Make sure not to interact with the ONN TV while it’s resetting and restarting itself so that you don’t interfere with or harm the process.

11. Determine If The Power Board Needs To Be Replaced

We’re now getting to the “last ditch effort” part of our list of solutions. If nothing else is working, you might consider opening up the TV to inspect the power board.

It’s better for a professional to do this; only do it if you’ve exhausted the other options and are no longer under warranty, so it can’t hurt to try.

Signs of a damaged power board include loose internal connections, burnt components, and bulging or leaking capacitors. If you see this, it’s time to replace the board. You can do this yourself but it’s NOT recommended. Instead, consult a professional.

12. See If The LED Backlight Needs To Be Replaced

The flashing light might actually be the result of a faulty LED backlight.

Like with the power board replacement, it’s best to consult a professional, though there are instructions out there if you want to do it yourself. But if you’re under warranty, use that option instead!

13. Contact Support For Additional Help

If you’ve gone through all these steps and the red light is still blinking, check your warranty! You may still be eligible for a free repair or replacement. The warranty and repair services for ONN products are handled by the American company Element Electronics.

Armed with that info, contact ONN Roku TV support for additional help. ONN / Walmart support can be reached online at https://onntvsupport.com, via phone at 1-844-334-2355 (9am – 9pm ET daily), or via email at customerservice@onntvsupport.com.

Why Is My ONN TV Not Turning ON But The Red Light Is On?

If your Onn TV is not turning on and instead showing a red light, it means that it is receiving power but is currently in standby mode.

There can be several reasons for this issue, such as a

  • faulty power supply,
  • remote,
  • connection cables, or
  • low power voltage.

Final Thoughts

A blinking or flashing red light on your ONN TV is frustrating but often fixable problem that is most likely the result of a poor or interrupted power supply or internet connection. By performing a power cycle and varying degrees of resets, and then, if needed, inspecting and potential replacing cords and outlets, you can often diagnose and fix the issue yourself in a matter of minutes.

If it turns out to be related to more extensive damage to components like the power board or LED backlight, it’s best to consult a professional or contact ONN TV support.
